The Learning Style Questionnaire (LSQ) has been used extensively within industry and academia for over 30 years, to measure learning preferences in individuals (aged 16+).

Developed by Peter Honey and Alan Mumford and based upon David Kolb's Learning Cycle, the purpose of the LSQ model is to help stimulate individuals think about the way they learn from their experiences (which most of us take for granted).

The LSQ preferences mapped onto Kolb's Learning Cycle (right).

Added value

The LSQ is a highly cost-effective self-development instrument, which promotes better individual and group understanding by revealing how people prefer to take in information.

Once completed, reports for both the LSQ online and print versions include a personal development plan, thus offering individuals the opportunity to improve under performing styles.

Thousands of organisations around the world have benefited from staff completing the LSQ by discovering whether they are inclined towards Activist, Reflector, Theorist or Pragmatist styles of learning, then attempting to improve less preferred styles.

Learning Style

Type of Learner

Learning preference

Activists Hands on Trial and error
Reflectors Tell me Briefed before proceeding
Theorists Convince me Clarity - Does this make sense?
Pragmatists Show me Likes an expert to demonstrate

Knowing your preferred learning style helps you to

  • Match learning opportunities with how you learn best - this makes your learning easier, more effective and more enjoyable.
  • Become an all-round learner - this increases your versatility to learn from a wide variety of different experiences; some formal, some informal, some planned and some spontaneous.
  • Improve your learning skills and processes - increasing your awareness of how you learn opens up the whole process to self-scrutiny and improvement.

Peter Honey

"Learning to learn is your most important capability since it provides the gateway to everything else you want to develop. How you learn is a key, if not the key life skill."

  • Takes circa 20 minutes to complete
  • Ideal for people who want a more comprehensive questionnaire (i.e. 20 items per style instead of 10)
  • Better for a longer session where there is time to explore learning styles and the suggestions for action in more depth
  • More likely to appeal to traditionalists who want to use the original Honey & Mumford questionnaire
